Deepening Impact

Key Elements for Effective Youth Development

A Safe, Positive Environment
Clubs are a safe haven where members feel physically and emotionally secure at all times.
Fun
Clubs facilities, staff and program offerings create a welcoming, positive environment that allows members to engage in play, enjoy their play time and be happy and eager to come to the Club.
Supportive Relationships
Clubs ensure that every young person feels connected to one or more adults and has friendships with peers.
Opportunities & Expectations
Club staff and programs consistently communicate the expectation that every child has the potential to excel, be productive and succeed at the Club and in life.
Recognition
Clubs take every opportunity to recognize and validate Club members’ achievements and accomplishments.
2007 Critical Insights Survey Results
Interviews were conducted onsite at the Portland, South Portland and Auburn/Lewiston Clubs. The questionnaire used in this research effort was developed by Critical Insights in collaboration with BGCSM.
Club Participation
Experience has shown us that the frequency of attendance is key to gauging the positive impact of Clubs. The more young people visit a Club, the more they gain from it.
61% members across all three locations report going to their club “almost every day” during the school year
75% of members ages 14 and older have belonged for three or more years
A Critical Role
Across all three locations, 40% members agree that the most important reason why the Boys & Girls Clubs is in their community is to provide “a place for kids to have fun and play.”
57% of all members report that they always have a positive experience coming to the Club
Club Impact
69% of all members report that their grades have improved since they joined the Club
83% of all members report that they feel better about their future since joining the Club
84% of all members report that the Club helps prepare members and encourages them to pursue college or other opportunities after high school
